In over my head. Need help!

Hello all,

Newbie here, pleasure to be part of the forum among brilliant RE minds.

I was recently given a 2006 Sixty-5 that needs some love. The previous owner wanted to go for a chopper/bobber look and removed a ton of the original parts. To be frank I thought it looked awful, and thus I began the long journey to restoring it back to her original look, and more importantly making it street legal so I can use it as a commuter.
This is my first bike and I've really been enjoying working on it even with a very limited knowledge of anything RE or motorcycles in general for that matter, but I love to learn and research.

Currently the bike has no indicators, front or rear. I just bought the rear plate holder/stop light/ indicator assembly as well as the rear wiring harness. Now the problem is the original owner completely rewired the bike relocating all electrics to the front of the tank on the frame, and of course I have no idea how to rewire it back to the original specs. I ordered the rear indicators thinking it would be a simple plug and play only to realize how wrong I was upon looking at the wiring on the indicators.

There are a few other issues with the bike as well, the Mikuni carb on it is leaking fuel, as well as the gas tank. But I'd really like to tackle the wiring issue.

I have a wiring diagram and have a very basic understanding of how it's supposed to be wired, if anyone has any tips on where to start I would greatly appreciate your help.

Thanks so much!

I just wish these idiots wouldn't do this. Unfortunately RE Bullets seem to be a magnet for clueless customisers following the herd and ruining them, so well done for taking one of these poor bikes on with a view to putting it back in good order. A good used original wiring harness might be a decent starting point.

You can of course do a complete rewire yourself, not as daunting as it sounds.

Thanks for the response!

I just ordered a wiring harness from enfieldcounty a few days ago, as well as a few tools for the job. I think once the harness comes in and I start the re wire I'll split the job into 2 bits focusing on the functional electrics first and then the lights, indicators, instruments etc after that.

If you'e ordered a full harness id start stripping out the old loom in its entirety and start from scratch with the wiring diagram it should just be plug and play and should be easy to align which end it goes as should have the headlamp bulb plug on it will guide you in which direction it needs to face

however watch when it comes to connecting up the ammeter as from experience the ammeter will have a female connector on it but the loom might just have 2 space connectors as opposed to a male connector

re the carb and tap leaks, carb can only really leak if the float height is incorrect or if the float bowl gasket is on its way out and with the fuel tank it may be the washer has failed that the tap goes into or tap or itself as the ones with the little clear bowl on tend to fail over time

cheap fixes either way

I'll take her out a few more times before I strip it down completely, as the harness should be here next week hopefully.

I think I may actually need to replace the ammeter, the light turns on, but the needle doesn't move at all.

I may have a few gaskets laying around, I'll swap the old one out and see if that helps. The owner before me removed the fuel tap, waiting for that to come in as well.

Please feel free to promote another parts supplier while using a forum supplied by our hosts - don't be surprised when they remove the free to use forum and you have no where to get free advice.

Another part of the problem of buying from India is that Indian suppliers are often unfamiliar with the export models, and you can end up buying something which doesn't fit (this seems to happen fairly regularly with people buying forks). AFAIK they never had the Sixty-5 model, or any other 5 speed bike with points ignition. The wiring harness for a 4 speed E/S 500 would be close but not an exact match, I suspect.

As for Rushour's point, if you'd said that you'd checked our hosts' lists and found that they didn't have any of what you needed in stock, reference to another supplier would perhaps be less of a gaffe, though to be fair I think the cat is out of the bag so far as "other sources" are concerned.

Thanks again for all of the free advice, moving forward (this is my first post) I'll make sure not to make the same mistake.

Ok.

Making a list of all supplies needed. I have a terminal crimper/wire stripper, soldering iron, zip ties, heat shrink etc.

Do I need connectors, extra wiring, and fuses, or should I wait on the wiring harness to come in?

Suggestions? What am I missing?

Thanks
