Super Meteor studs

Hello
I am about to properly rebuild my old Super Meteor that has sat at the back of the shed for years
Has anybody used thicker 3/8 studs on a Super Meteor engine- were they fitted to later Constellations ? Do the Super Meteor barrels/head have to be drilled out to accept these larger studs ?
Reason I ask is my motor in the past has pulled some of the standard studs out of the crankcase. These were repaired in the past by a previous owner by fitting stepped/tapered studs. Am going to repair previous damage and want to prevent any future problems in future
Also any advise on preventing blown head gaskets on big twins.
Thanks
