Hi I was recently told that when turning off engine if you stop it by the decompresser it will help save the sprag clutch as it will go over tdc, anyone got any thoughts?

Yes it is a good idea because if you just turn off the ignition the engine can bounce back off compression as it slows to a halt. The sprag clutch does not like this!

Would this also be kinder to oil pump drive on any iron Enfield, I'm told kick backs can damage pump drive?

Yes definitly use the decompressor. Kick backs are bad for Bullets, especially the Sprag. When you switch of with the ignition switch or kill switch you are switching off power to the coil. If the points are closed at the time, this could occur when the piston is a long way before TDC and the result will be to send the piston back the way it came.
