Carb v points...again (sigh)

Hi all...following my previous post where I managed to solve running and (I thought) fuelling problems on my 2006 500 Classic by finally adjusting the points correctly, this morning I found (as is the way) that I had spoken too soon. Although the bike still starts, runs, pulls and accelerates FAR better now, I came up to some lights and.....PHUT. The fuelling problem has returned folks. Got to say that it's much more infrequent now that I have a decent idle, but I still can't rely on the bike idling for any length of time when warm. Idle speed seems to be faster when the engine is cold and slows right down when warm. I have a new plug, new(ish) correctly adjusted points, good spark, good condenser, newly cleaned carb, so will turn my attention to the only thing left...the air inlet tract. If this fails I really will be stumped.
Cheers

Quote: "Idle speed seems to be faster when the engine is cold and slows right down when warm".....sounds like like your idle mixture is far too rich Tim. Screw in air screw fully clockwise and then out about 1 and a 1/2 turns. Reset tickover speed to chosen revs and re-adjust pilot air screw a small amount either way to achieve the fastest tickover...then screw in air screw about 1/8 turn to help stabilise tickover...make sure engine is fully hot.....if you have done this already it is obviously someting else

Hi Les H - fantastic, will try that one. I was wondering if idle would slow down if rich. (You may gather I don't know much about carb adjusting...) The plug is very sooty, I was waiting until the effects of the too-retarded ignition were burned away though... One slight weirdy is, I have never personally adjusted the mixture at all, but maybe mixture screws can vibrate.....? I have got our hosts' tech feature on carb adjustment for easy reference but you have - as always - summarised beautifully.
