5 Speed box neutral switch

Quick question. The neutral switch in my bike (2003 Bullet converted to 5 speed) seems to have stopped working after only 300 miles or so. I can get to it to take it out easy enough, just wondering whether I have to drain the gearbox oil as it looks pretty close to where the oil level is. Also do these switches often stop working ? Thanks.

Took the bike out for a spin this eveningm switch worked, but was not working yesterday!! Are these things known to become intermittent?
