Hi,
I am thinking of fitting a USB power supply to my Himalayan for the satnav. I have seen videos of people putting the wires direct to the battery but I was wondering if it would better to isolate the power supply through the ignition or is that causing to many problems. Any thoughts people?

Hi Graham, it was being discussed here a week ago, if you wire it direct to the battery you run the risk of flattening the battery if you forget to remove the satnav

These devices use a small amount of power even when nothing is plugged into them as they have circuitry in them to convert 12v to 5v.

it's not waterproof,

and should be removed when the engine is not running!

Those are pretty standard instructions, and remove devices when the engine is not running just mean disconnect anything plugged into the charger.

You are right papasmurf. The unit should be disconnected when the engine is not running. Putting the connections throught the ignition switch may take a little to much for the switch, so a relay actuated by the igntion would be prudent. Or perhaps the Himalayan already has one?

Thanks people for the advice. There are a lot of Himalayans out there now so has anyone actual experience of fitting a power supply?

There is a video on youtube by a chap called Adrian Eades that may be of interest where he fits a socket that looks very similar to the one that you are looking at. He fits a separate fuse box as he has also fitted spotlights and a rear light.

Zero wiring and take it off and put it in your pocket when you leave the bike
