It should be pointed out that the mic on my phone is not the best and the noise is a little exaggerated.
First I thought it was piston slap but if anything the engine is quieter when it's cold and noisier when it's warm.
Then I thought it was the rockers but upon inspection there was no discernible play other than fractional longitudinal play.
As you can see there's a bit of smoke but not a huge amount, but then there's not much coming out of the engine breather pipe(gentle little breaths) which perhaps suggests worn piston after all.
Bike has about 25,000 miles on it and is new to me, runs and idles fine, has enough compression that it requires use of the decompression lever to nudge ut past TDC.
Hitchcocks seem to suggest that aluminium barreled bikes are a bit noisier but it seems excessive.
At this stage I'm leaning towards new cylinder and piston (I'd get it rebored but no-one in London seems interested / capable,) but could the noise be valves in their guides?
I've put a screwdriver to the barrel and 'listened to the handle'and the noise is definitely less noticeable there than when placed on the rocker covers/ oil feed banjo bolts.

I've been riding bikes since 1981 but mostly Japs. Any constructive comments are welcome.
