Investing in a spare Electra Engine

Having read the many horror stories about Electra X's I wondered if it would be wise to buy an engine that has become available. I know that the engine is a 2007 leanburn engine with the carb primary cases & starter motor, but without the gearbox. Would this engine go into a 2006 Electra X?
The engine has done just over very little mileage. If hopefully I didn't need to use this engine will it deteriorate as a result of being sat in my garage or is it worth a punt? I also thought I could use the head to fit a proper decompressor as shown by Adrian.

You will have to decide whether you like your newly-purchased Electra-X enough to reckon that it's a keeper (not in the zoo sense).
If your decision is "yes", the 2006 and 2007 engines swap over happily, so get the spare engine and primary. Chuck a little oil down the plug hole and turn the engine over occasionally, it will be fine it it's kept in the dry.

And if you DO buy the spare engine, DO NOT be tempted to buy a spare frame with V5C, That way madness lies.

If it is cheap enough probably worth the punt, but just the fact it is being offloaded to me I get a feeling the big end has failed and you will never know till you fire it up

I have been told it came out of a runner. Sometimes you have to go with trust I guess. What would you consider a good price Norm? (The gearbox has been taken off for the blokes own bike).

If you can turn the crank backwards and forwards a bit with the plug out, any suspicious clonks will require a convincing explanation from the seller.

I would like to know why it was removed, only good explanation would be from a crashed bike

Would you consider £600 a fair price for an lean burn engine from a crashed bike? It's one of those things you never find when you need it quick I guess, but then you have to live with it.

Cov Lad, I would consider that way too dear for an unknown motor, that is big bucks in my opinion, but I am not on the ground there so couldn't be sure, Adrian would be best to comment on it.

Norm could if it's priced in Australian dollars. Meanwhile, in northern latitudes £600 seems like a lot, but at against that our hosts have got an incomplete Electra-X engine (no primary) up for a whopping £1,050 in the used parts section, though they're still listing new cranks for £521.40.
I would suggest you follow this one up but DO check it over, and see if he'll take £500 for it if it's OK.
