rectifier regulator

Hi All.
Having traced an electrical fault to the Boyer Brandsen powerbox, I've been saving up to buy a new one when I found rectifier-regulators on ebay for under £10. At this price I could buy a couple and keep a spare in the toolbox just in case. Has anyone tried these or are they just a false economy?
