I have just fitted a Mk1 Amal carburettor kit to my 350 Bullet. Unfortunately it is difficult to start. After “tickling” the carb and applying full choke, it will not start, trying different choke and throttle positions makes no difference. On removing the spark plug, it is dry with no sign of flooding. On pouring a little fuel in the plug hole, the bike starts immediately and then runs OK, any ideas anyone?

Sounds like a blocked pilot jet, which on a new carb could be due to a piece of manufacturing debris/swarf. Is it the original type Mk1 Concentric or the newer Premier version?

It’s the type supplied in the Hitchcock’s kit, part number 200120. I assume it is the original type, though can’t be sure. I’ll check the pilot jet.

Have a look at this if it is the older zinc alloy type, and scroll about halfway down for the pilot jet info.

I’ll keep a look out for the little people when I check out the carb! Thanks for the replies.

Seeing as your bike is difficult to start, I think it's most likely that the dwarf in your carburettor is Sleepy.

If it starts but doesn't run right, the dwarf might be Grumpy, or Sneezy. ;-)

The one who should be fixing it (and clearly isn't) is Doc and when it is fixed he'll be Happy!
