My speedo has stopped working. Checked cable all ok. Seems to be making a clicking noise - think it's coming from the hub but when i take the cable out of the speedometer the clicking stops and the cable is 'turning round'. However it still makes a clicking noise when i 'reverse'.

Any idea?

Have you tried too unscrew the speedo cable from the bottom gear box and pull the inner cable out and check the cable is its not broken near the bottom first as this is where I have had mine break previously. if not Then lift the front wheel and check to see if the click still exist with the cable removed and see if the output turns when the wheel is turned.

P/S ))and see if the output turns when the wheel is turned(( That should read as I have had the cable break at the bottom but it still turned at the top when removed from speedo the clicking was the two broken bits catching. Why cant we edit posts.

Tried it. The cable turns when in the whhel end. How can you test the speedo? Can you put an insert in the bottom of the speedo (where the cable goes) and make it turn? My thought is it should turn freely. Any thoughts?

I would suggest to take speedo out, it is quite simple and then take something like a piece of coat hanger or soft iron rod and flatten the end to fit into the speedo drive, then use a hand drill or electric drill on slow speed to turn the speedo. If it doesn't work then the problem is the speedo. Maybe the needle does not move but the odometer does. Cheers TrevorCH

Speedo didn't work. Got a nice new one from our hosts (white face). Turns out the replacement for 'india market is 2 seperate adapters with a 6 and 2 pin connectors on where as mine is 1 whole '9' pin (with the 8 wires going in from the bulbs). Great!! After speaking to our hosts it seems some of the UK spec Electras are like that and they only do the 'india type' connectors. Ho-hum a trip to B&Q and crash course in replacing connectors!! Enfields eh????......................

2007 Electra X.
Replaced with a nice white face one from our hosts. Now the needle dances around like crazy. Cable looks fine although the sleeve seems a bit loose at the 'wheel hub' even though all connectors are tightly secured.
Any ideas?

Pot luck with Indian parts some are ok others you chuck straight in the bin. If you want good fitting parts you buy a Japper. Sad but true
