Bought this head light switch. The idea is to install it in place of the ignition key in the casquette and to hide the ignition key somewhere else on the bike (open to suggestions...). Electrical is my lowest skillset. I'm not even sure where to begin. I can't find an online manual or install guide anywhere. I've labeled the terminals on the back of the switch to hopefully help with anyone's explanation of how to put this on the bike. I will not be leaving the factory switches on the bike, so it doesn't have to work with what is already installed.

Thanks!

You don't say what model of bike you have.

To post images, you would need to put the image address in HTML img src tags (google it, would take a while to explain). For google photos, you also need the direct link to the image when you are NOT logged in otherwise only you will be able to see it. To get this, obtain the links you used above then paste them into a private/ingognito browser. Right click on the image then find the inage address either by selecting "copy image location" or selecting properties and copying the address from the popup window.

A google images direct link looks like this:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/avUTS ... 75-h986-no

If you put it in img src tags you get the picture

From StogieRob's past posts it's a USA-market AVL classic, think of a Sixty-5 with an Electra-X engine and electrics (TCI ignition, 3 phase charging).

Assuming the switch is the same as the picture in stinkwheel's post, physical fitment is a case of removing the ignition key switch and its chrome bezel which is a tight press fit (might need to knock it out from underneath), then you can press the switch it the big hole that's left. There should be a rubber sleeve to fit around the edge of the switch moulding and ensure a tight fit in the casquette (assuming it's still fitted).

Next question, do you want the switch for purely cosmetic purposes and carry on using the handlebar switches for the actual switching, or do you want to wire this in and use it for real? If you want to use the switch for its intended purpose you have to work out the wiring. This switch was originally designed in the days of 6V alternator systems which were more complicated. So what we need is to identify the numbered posts you still want to use and the ones you can ignore.

Keeping things as simple as possible we need the feed to the switch which comes from the ammeter. Once that is wired-in we need the output wires to

1. The dip switch for the headlight;

2. The casquette pilot lights (and any pilot in the main headlamp reflector unit, might not be fitted);

3. The tail light and speedometer and ammeter

I will be fitting one of these switches (or one very much like it) to one of my own projects and have been looking at various wiring diagrams that appear to use this switch on 12V systems, and they don't all seem to agree regarding the wiring or quite match your terminal layout, despite being very similar.

If one of our experts hasn't replied definitively before then, I need to experiment and will get back to you.

Stinkwheel - after typing that, I have to ask - where did you choose that moniker from??? And if I wasn’t an IT guy, i’d have no clue what you were talking about, but i would have never thought that I’d need to use an html tag to embed a picture. Oy.... i will now embarrass myself by putting in two line break tabs to see if that’s how i can actually maintain some paragraph spacing....[/b][/b]

Adrian - I intend to use it for real. Getting it installed will be one less item on the handle bars once I decide to go retro for them. I’ve already got plans for the decompression lever (old style choke lever, or just leaving a loop of wire near the lever on the side of the crank case). Last thing I’ll need will be a button for the horn and that’ll take care of the left side of the handle bars. As for the switch - yippee, experimentation! I found a video where someone did something with the wiring behind the headlight and identified the lighting wiring harness/plugs. I’m crossing my fingers that i’ll discover those wires and start tracing from there.

Thanks!

My bike has one of those and the switch on the minda controls so to get my lights to work i have to turn that big switch to high and the handlebar switch alternates between high and low beam. My ignition key is fitted to the right toolbox. I have been thinking about one day going all retro and getting rid of the minda controls at which point I will have to wire it so that the big bakalite switch controls the lights solely. Mine is 1991 4 speed iron barrel 500.

stinkwheel is a term for a smoky 2-stroke motorcycle. I started using it as a pseudonym on the Jawa owners club Yahoo group back in the mind 1990's on account of hoiw I always had to go at the back of group rideouts because of the smell.

Yes. Double linebreak tabs. No. < br>eally.

OK, sorted and checked with battery, bulb and a few bits of wire.

Go back to the picture above with the red numbers.

Ignore numbers 1, 2 & 3.

Red 4 is the wire to the dip switch for the headlight.

Red 5 is the wire from the ammeter with the 12V supply.

Red 6 is the wire to the pilot light/sidelights.

Red 7 is for the wires to the tail lamp, speedometer and ammeter lights

The switch actually has its own numbers cast into the plastic body, look closely.
