Hi all, any ideas, please?
Enfield Bullet 500cc, 2007, iron.

Just been doing an oil change and on removing the front drain nut under the engine, found that all that's left is the piece that should be on the other end of the gauze.... but no signs of any bits of gauze at all. Tried a little poke around with a screw, to check if any bits inside but unable to find anything. I've cleaned up the plug and replaced it, but, of course, there's no gauze filter there any more.

I do have another new one, but wonder if it is really worth putting more dodgy stuff in there?

I don't know how long it's been like this, a year or so since the last service. Otherwise, no visible bits in the oil and it all seems to be running perfectly.

Well Lidl are selling Powerfix Profi Inspection Camera at the moment for less than £40 and that is a lot cheaper than the potential disaster of running the engine, until you find out where the bit has disappeared to.

The gauze is in there unless it's evaporated so it really needs to come out.
Lots of fiddling about with bits of bent wire I'm afraid.
Or you can get a really cheap camera to attach to a tablet, tablet or phone. They are surprisingly good for what they cost. Search for borescope on Ebay.

The Schroedinger gauze filter sits in its own recess. It's either in there or it's not.

Are you trying to say a cat ate the filter?

Perhaps whoever serviced it last broke it and just stuffed the top bit in the hole and screwed the plug back in?
