Alright...18 tooth sprocket installed. Discovered that when the previous owner gave up on the BRS dry clutch belt drive, they must have just purchased the BRS chain driven basket and used the friction plates from the dry clutch--now running wet, and missing a friction plate because the chain driven basket is designed for thinner plates. Whatever, that's the least pressing issue at the moment. Got it back together, test ride showed surging at speed, popping through the carb occasionally, too lean. Installed a larger needle jet in the Amal 932, that cured the lean condition.

On the first test ride after that it made it a few blocks before it died all of a sudden. Would not start, only a backfire through the exhaust every now and then. Get it back in the garage to discover the timing is off, though nothing has apparently moved. Tried to set it a few times, the points set was not cooperating, time to scrap that set. We went ahead and just stripped the distributor and installed a Boyer Bransden MK4, no more hassle from the ignition side.

First ride out after that, and now I'm hearing what I would describe as a hollow clanking sound from the engine when riding around. It's less apparent when sitting and revving the engine, though I think it is there faintly. It is more apparent in this video, taken while under way. Sorry about the quality, I was just holding the phone and more trying to concentrate on capturing the audio, and had to shift in the process. You can hear it a little when I first accelerate, and it is the most pronounced after about 10 seconds. It remains there, just increasing with frequency as RPMs increase. At 35-40MPH it's kind of a pulsating higher frequency noise. Is that just the way these things are? It doesn't sound right to me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guCJ-ZhoKls

RoSy: Thank you for the suggestions. I have tried retarding, first the width of a Sharpie mark on the stator plate, then about 3 Sharpie mark widths--for a rough estimate. The first adjustment was no change either in the noise or how it ran. With the second adjustment it idled and ran more poorly, still no change in the noise. I don't think it's pinging. Big end is not out of the question. The previous owner had the engine rebuilt by Perry's Cycle and Sidecars in Texas about 2-3 years ago. Since then it suffered an oil pump failure that ran metal through the engine. Being after the filter, the rocker arms were damaged. My hope was that the filter saved the bottom end. When I had the cylinder and piston out I checked sideplay of the little end of the rod, and pushed and pulled on it. Sideplay was within Snidal limits, no clicking or detectable play from the big end when I pushed/pulled on the rod.

Rotor on the mainshaft flopping around, something is amiss as you know I certainly wouldn't ride it especially after a pump failure. Time to get the tool kit dirty.
