Don't know about the 350, but the head stead coming loose on a 500 will turn it into a pneumatic drill.

Depends on whether whatever your mate is going to do with the bike - if it is to be ridden, keep the head steady as it is an integral part of the engine / frame structure and the handling will not be as good without it. If it is to be trailered around and just put on display, then it won't be a problem.

Mine came loose once and I thought the engine was falling out!

Same here - the petrol tank amplifies the rattling and vibration. I'd not had my 350 long and went out for a day in the Peak District. It suddenly began rattling like crazy and thought something very serious was wrong in the top end of my 350's engine (I suspected a rocker block had come loose) so I began dismantling the bike in a cafe car park! As soon as I got to the loose head steady bolt, I breathed a huge sigh of relief and put it all back together.
