Hot ignition coil

Hi all,
Took the old 59 250cc clipper out for a good run on Tuesday afternoon up country, done 85 miles all told and it never missed a beat (thank god), put a couple of spanners etc in the toolbox next to the ignition coil and when I returned home I removed them and what a surprise I had when a touched the coil! boy was it hot round about 34/36 degrees C.
I did expect it to be warm of course, but under the impression that these coils where oil filled to help cooling.
Is this normal for my 6volt system.
Cheers.
