There are gouges in the rear of the backplate in the distributor caused by the pins on the A/R unit making contact with the baseplate.

I have made up a spacer to sit behind the plate (approx 1.2mm thick) yet the pins still seem to be making intermittent contact with the rear of the plate.

Any ideas on how to fix this? I assume it is not down to a bearing failing.

You can place shins behind the distributor pinion to pull the A/R unit deeper into the housing. I bought a set from here for the last Enfield I owned which came with a distributor. Although it sounds you need a washer more than a shim!

Hi Andy, I fixed one with exactly the same problem just a few weeks ago - there is a circlip on the other end of the distributor shaft, behind the drive gear. It has probably slipped off, allowing the shaft to float sideways and cause the contact you describe. You will need to take off the timing cover and the gear on the end of the shaft to access it.
