Hi
Has anyone have experience of removing and replacing the original swing arm for a wider swing arm?

Following watching a few videos by our Indian colleagues it looks to be a straight forward job so thanks all.

It ought to be simple job of stripping out the old bits and reassembly. I assume you'd be using one of our hosts' wider swinging arms, I have seen some rather horrible looking replacement swinging arms on ebay, instead of using tubular or box section steel for rigidity the two main pieces appear to be nothing more than steel strip.

I have converted an Electra X into a trials/trail using many of the parts supplied by Hitchcocks. I found that fitting a Dunlop 4.00 x 18 tyre has left minimal space and it is very difficult to stop it rubbing on the swing arm. Even with an accurately built wheel a minor 'twitch' on the tyre causes more rubbing.

Graham43, I have to admits to being puzzled. I have just checked my Electra X (ish) which is shod front and back with 19" Continental TwinDuro TKC 80 110/80 tyres
The physical width of the tyres is 4 inches, (I just measured them with digital calipers.)
There is at least 1/2 an inch clearance both sides on the swing arm.

I thought you can get away with little clearance even with standard swing arm . my friend 3.50 x 18 . With english frame . he put 18 x 4.0 tyre earlier i can ask if his tyre was rubbing or not. i want built trials bike with 18 x 4.0 regards

My bike is a 350 Bullet Electra (Indian home market, iron barrel).

I have a 3.50" x 19 knobbly rear tyre and there isn't a great deal of clearance either side of that, tbh, due to the blocks on the shoulder. I doubt a 4" tyre of the same make would have any clearance at all without the wider swing arm.

I put that tyre on the front but there was marginal clearance on the mudguard bolts so I made and fitted extension plates to raise the mudguard. That resulted in my getting mud spattered so I removed the spacers and fitted a 3.25" x 19 tyre instead instead and moved the 3.50 to the back wheel.

as you used to remind us, your bike is non-standard! However the standard Indian swinging arm should take any 3.50", 100/90 or 4.10 section tyre happily, possibly others. I tried a 4.00 x 18" avon AM26 on ASBO12 but the 4.00" quoted is nominal, 4⅜" (116mm)mm wide is more like it in reality, and would only fit with the rear axle adjusters set right back. I didn't even try to fit the chain guard. The 100/90 x 18 on there at the moment is actually 108mm wide according to Avon's data but just fits nicely, the extra 8mm clearance being crucial.
