Hi I have a Lucas SR1 which produces a weak spark when turned by hand- is this normal? should it produce a fat blue spark when turned by hand ? ta Martyn

How fast are you turning it, Martyn? If you can spin it by hand at anywhere near cranking speeds (easier with a timing pinion fitted) it should give a nice fat spark. SR1s will also spark if spun in the wrong direction, though not as well.

Try spinning it with a cordless drill, that works for me as a test. And do not remove the contact breaker cam! This is pre-set on the shaft for best flux and if you lose the setting it's a specialist job to re-set.

it pretty simple the key slot is the highest point for the spark.

put the cam left of the key slot for a right turning ignition and vise versa for left turning ignition.

no magic involved.

Mauri, do you mean anti-clockwise at the drive end of the mag (what the Bullet uses) for left-turning?

Unfortunately it's not quite as easy as Mauri suggest's. Go the Brightspark Magneto website and find the Lucas sr series service manual and it give chapter and verse on how to set the cam.
