In my box of assorted enfield parts is a solex horn. The previous owner has rattle-canned it matt black (along with pretty much the entire bike).Mysteriously, it still works.

I notice it's held together by a series of screws and nuts round the edge. I guess this answers the question IF it can be dismantled so I can strip the paint off but then there is the question SHOULD it be dismantled? Will it prove impossible to reassemble again or is it full of pingshits?

Can`t you strip off the paint without dismantling it? Can you just clean it and paint over it?
There is nothing that can`t be repaired,----if you have enough money.

I could wire brush it in one piece, but I'm concerned I'll get paint flakes/dust ino the guts of it and gum up the mechanism. The thing is, it works fine so my two main options are to either leave it alone or take it apart and clean it up. If taking it apart is likely to wreck it, I'll just leave it.

I found a listing for a Solex horn on Ebay and if it is the same type as yours I'd say you can take the cover off, it seems, like many horns of this type, to be just a decorative grille. However, that doesn't mean the screws don't also do the job of holding the working parts together! If you do decide to strip it just be careful that the inner tone plate stays in it's correct location relative to all the other parts. Maybe a few temporary screws and nuts to hold it together while you take the grille off and clean it up?
