Starter motor failure

Hi All

The starter motor on my 2016 Classic Chrome has stopped working. I followed the test procedure in the manual (touch +ve cable to terminal and -ve cable to motor body) and all I got was a very big spark, strong enough to burn the metal of the body. This seems to me to indicate a short somewhere. I've stripped the motor but all looks well. Could it be that the insulation between the terminal and the body has failed thus creating a short or is there another likely cause? I would be grateful of any help offered. Ian

hello --you need to identify if its the motor or relay ..your correct with the battery check -- go straight from plus red side to top of connector on motor then touch any ground and listen for the motor turning engaging it will spark but if it turns its usually the relay -- ive gone through three in as many years ..also a good link for drop test ..

Hi. Thanks for taking the time to reply. It's not the solenoid as that is clicking ok. There seems to be a short whenever the armature is introduced. I've tested the armature itself for an internal short (thanks to advice from Rick Parkington of Classic Bike) and that is fine. I'm stumped but as our hosts list a replacement starter motor for £405 I won't be replacing it! I will let you know if I ever solve the problem. Ian
