Some of you may remember that I put a request for ideas to stop the intermittent severe smoking from my '59 Crusader. Well after checking and rechecking everything to do with oil, and replacing a fair few bits, I finally changed the rings even though the ones fitted seemed absolutely fine. When the new ones arrived the difference was obvious as the contact surfaces on the new oil ring were about 1/3 the width of those on the old one. Also the tension on the new one seemed stronger. This obviously increases the pressure of the scraper against the cylinder wall substantially and has cured the problem.
I still don't fully understand why the smoking was not continuous but I'm not going to dwell on it. The motor is now in rude health and oil tight, (for the moment).
