Thanks Paw1 for this knowledge, its this kind of info, passed selflessly on from a british bike shedologist, that has nurtured and nourished this great hobby of ours down the generations.Helping to keep the common working man  within the financial constraints imposed by the goverment and various ex swmbo's. I raise another glass of my ginger wine and wish you good health and longevity my friend. Hellfire.. this stuff is strong. i love you all.

Just goes to show how useful this forum can be. I was unscrewing a mirror from the handlebars when it slipped as it came free. It could have fallen anywhere but in true sods law fashion it fell square onto the speedo smashing the glass. Golly, what a nuisance I exclaimed, but when I finished cursing my bad luck I remembered a post about this very thing. Sure enough the tax disc holders glass is a perfect fit and an hours fettling later all was fixed. So thankyou Paw1 for posting that very useful tip.

Hi.

I don't need this. Yet...

But I'd be very interested to know if you have to put any sealant between metal and glass [plastic] to stop the rain getting in. Also, how does peeling the metal back affect the chrome? Any peeling? And does it go back to shape easily?

Would be very interested to hear any more of the techniques you used.

Regards,

Chris

Hi Chris, the glass fits into a groove in a rubber ring which is held in place by a hard plastic ring which also fits into the groove so I didn't think any sealant was necessary. My speedo is a Smiths Indian retro copy and the bezel is stainless steel[or old baked bean tin] To remove it I prised the crimped edge out using a small screwdriver working bit by bit all the way round until it was just clear. To refit it I held the speedo face down on a firm surface and eased the edge back using the flat blade of a larger screwdriver. Hope this helps.
