So long as the new clutch has the correct centre for the 5 speed gearbox shaft, it ought to fit straight on. If you look at the on-line parts book for the 5 speed Electra-X, bigger brother to your Thunderbird, the description of the clutch basket assembly is for the 4 plate clutch, but the same diagram also shows a 5 plate er... filling.

Hi Guys-------Hi Gof, .......so you want to fit the complete clutch assembly from a 5-speed gearbox onto a 4-speed gearbox....Is that the idea ??.........as you say "All of it"...........here is the drawing for a Bullet '65 clutch which would appear to be the same as that for the Electra X.......................................... Alan, please re-read Goff's original post, it's for a 5 speed box (which is what the AVL Thunderbirds were fitted with, same as the Electra-X and your Sixty-5). He wants to know if the 5 speed clutch with 5 plates in it is a direct replacement for the 5 speed clutch with 4 plates in it. Innit? Simples.

The clutch centres on the 4 and 5 speed gearboxes are different to suit the respective gearbox main shafts, but otherwise it's the same clutch, though the number of plates can vary.

Hi Adrian-----------Gotcha !!.........I didn't know that a 5-speed box could have either a 4-plate OR a 5-plate option fitted..I was under the impression that they came with a 5-plate version as standard....That Service Kit I mentioned now also makes sense and of course is no good for Gof ..Initially Gof's second reply seemed to me to be at odds with his first request, but I see what he's getting at now....Thanks for the "Heads' up"..

The catalogue gives a YES to fitting 5 plate conversion [90041] to a THUNDERBIRD. Or am I missing something in Goff's question too?!
