I just bought a 1994 500 Bullet off eBay that had been sitting in a shed for 18 months. got it home, and I kid you not, it started first kick with stale petrol and a dead battery. it smoked a bit mind you!

I get the same thing every time mine starts, even if I've just been in the shop for a pint of milk. It always does, I'm just pleasantly surprised.
One of the joys of enfield ownership I think.

People get all paranoid about stale petrol. I've started engines on petrol that's been stood for three years. Didn't run very well but started and ran.

Hi Guys....The old-type injection pump fuel rack is set to "Excess" fueling for starting purposes ( Equivalent result to applying your choke ) hence the black smoke.........Notice how it clears when the turbo reaches operating speed ( Listen to the "Whine" )....As it's an old loco I doubt if there are any filters, scrubbers etc. in the exhaust system either....That "oily" look to the exhaust makes me think it's running on a heavy fuel oil rather than a lighter Diesel one....Nice one Papasmurf...Got anything on the "Big Boys" going up Sherman Hill in the 1950's ??

If you're not convinced how bad "stale" petrol can be. Put some in a coleman camping stove. Works on the same principal as an engine, vapourising fuel air mix through a metered jet. Let's just say you do NOT get a clean, blue flame.

G---R---O---A----N !!!!..........oops, wardrobe failure !!........Ah, that's better....Now then they were Bill Stanier's best overall product IMHO....You can trace their heritage back through the GWR 49xx Hall and initially Churchward's Saint Class....and the legendary Standard No1 Boiler...Notice how the exhaust is light grey ( The fire is at its' hottest = almost incandescent on full blast !!)....When the colour goes to black that's when the fireman has started to put the coal on = 9 swings of the shovel to one round of coaling...Listen to the exhaust beat = 4 even beats per one wheel revolution......Notice the safety valves just "Feathering" = those two firemen are on top of their game, max. pressure available against boiler demand...13 coaches average = 30 tons = about 400 tons on the drawbar !!.............Papasmurf, we've never met but you've obviously got the measure of me---that really struck a chord !!---Many thanks indeed...................My apologies for going "Off thread" but it comes within the main title ( I hope ).......I'm just setting the valves on one of my 5" gauge steam locos right now---
