My bike is a 1960 350 cc R.E. Clipper, I have completed the top end overhaul and in the process of re assembling, the bike has had a new piston fitted and a rebore by the previous owner. After taking out the Piston rings I found that the top piston ring had no markings on the upper or lower surfaces however, the 2nd ring had a mark 'Top' engraved on the upper surface. My question is, should the ring marked 'Top' be in the top (1st position) on the piston and with the surface marked 'Top' uppermost? and the unmarked ring be in the second position? Both Piston gaps are the same. it also has a third oil scraper ring.
Thanks in advance.

I've seen these sets before. Is the plain ring a chrome finish? If so, it is the top ring and goes either way up and the other ring is the second ring and is fitted with the 'top' marking facing up. If all the rings are the same finish the one with Top is the top ring. Confusing isn't it!

Hello Mark,
I have taken a photo of my piston ring, the one I suspect is 'Chromed' and have un-sucesfully tried to add the phot, results are in my last reply.
My ring has a chromed effect on the top and bottom edge for about 2mm, this is the edge which contacts the barrel, (upper and lower edge of the ring). Is this a "chromed ring" ?
The other ring with "top" stamped on it smooth and does not have the same shiny edge.
"A picture is worth a thousand words" --if anyone knows how to post a picture could they please let me know.
Any comments Mark would be appreciated.
Thanks Stuart

It does sound like a chromed ring, so fit it as I suggested. To clarify, the other ring usually has 'TOP' marked on it because it is slightly tapered on it's edge and it must therefore be the right way up. Anyone else like to comment, Alan?
