oilproblems

Hi all can someone please help. 0I own a 1950 g2 350 bullet, and seem to have a problem with oil running out of the breather nut when engine is stood. Also there is pool of oil on start up from the crank case over flow. Any advice would be most helpful. Many Thanks Kevin

Your motor is 'wet sumping'.


IF the oil is draining from out the timing chest,(which they all tend do a bit) not much to remedy the situation other than to have a new bush made for the timing side bearing.


IF the oil is coming from the the oil tank, you need to reface the Feed oil-pump disc face, and then lap it anew onto its seat in the timing cover.

Maybe all you need to do is to ensure that you do not ‘top-up’ the oil beyond the half-way mark on the dip-stick and make sure you leave the engine with the piston at the top of its stroke – turn the engine with the kick start until you feel compression.

Thanks for reply. I have been working on the bike today and noticed oil coming out of the breather nut. Oil on the dipstick was showing low. In the nut there is a disc and when you operate the kick lever the disc squirts out oil.? I f is normal then so be it. Thanks

Because these early Bullets have a breather through the drive side mainshaft it is very low down in the crankcase compared to the later breathers (2 different versions,) which are mounted high on the crankcase neck. If your engine has wet sumped (which is what it sounds like,) some if not all of the oil which is lying in the crankcase will be pumped straight out of the breather long before the scavenge pump can lift it from the bottom of the case in the normal way. I suggest you take the spark plug out and keep kicking until it's cleared and once it has use the recommended techniques of leaving the piston at TDC etc to stop the oil running down when not in use.

Get the engine running properly then see what you have to deal with!
