What's the piston speed in a steam engine, Alan? How does it compare with an i.c. engine? (Dare I say that a Geordie may have replied "I haven't a Clue Pet"

h dearie, dearie me !!----Haven't got a clue, pet !!...Well at least you've got the sounding right and not "Clup pet" as some seem to think..LoL !!....... So anotherAllan--it's very difficult to give a single, definitive answer because there are so many different applications of both types......Stationary, Marine, Rail, Automotive, ---- High Speed, Low Speed, 4-stroke / 2-stroke, single acting / double acting....A high degree superheat steam cylinder can have an almost similar aggressive temperature environment as an IC or CI engine........To give you an example}--- The Royal Naval Destroyers of early WW1 had high speed triple expansion reciprocating engines which could push an 800 ton vessel at speeds up to 30 knots.....A paddle steamer's engines by comparison gives 2,000 HP at 50 rpm.....http://www.waverleyexcursions.co.uk/wel ... am-engine/ ..... Modern day Maersk container ships are powered by a single, 2-stroke Diesel which can push a 60,000 ton ship at 25 knots !!.....http://gcaptain.com/emma-maersk-engine/....Image
