Certainly mine has similar play and has had for thousands of miles, of course in use it runs with plenty of oil being thrown around it, and also that the bearing only rotates when you pull the clutch lever in; not exactly precision though,is it!

I recently rebuilt a Redditch clutch (same design,) where the play in the clutch basket seemed excessive to me. I wondered whether it would be possible to add an extra circlip to the clutch centre and surprisingly, it was, eliminating the play. I have tried this on other clutches in the past and there was no way another circlip would fit but presumably because of manufacturing tolerances this time it did. It has made a very sweet clutch too, although this is with all the other improvements as well.

All the bullet clutch baskets that I have seen do this and I have never had any problems. They just look strange. When all the clutch plates are in and every thing is tightened up this play is not there then.

Hi Guys------- my friend Trevor has a 1960's BSA WD B40 350cc and his clutch does just the same........unnerving at first but you get used to it after a few strip-downs !!!
