B5 bullet fitting a rack

Hi all,
nice new rack appeared from our hosts a few days ago (and mighty fine it is too). Now, fitting it should be easy, I need to remove the mounting bolt from the rear of the seat (yup, easy peasy), then the other bracket for the rack goes onto the bolt for the rear shocks. Now, it has to go behind the bracket for the shock. So I undo nut, check, then I try to remove bolt so that I can thread it through the rack bracket. Now, there isn't enough clearance behind the bolt to remove it due to the mudguard. In fact, there doesn't seem enough clearance behind it to pull it out enough even to remove the rear shock (though not got that far yet). Without resorting to unnecessary dismantling I thought I'd consult with the collective wisdom or otherwise of this forum before I really cock things up. Can I remove said bolt without taking apart most of the rear of the bike? I assume I'm being a numpty here, in which case there should be an easy solution, and I shall be glad of it. It's a 2015 B5 Bullet with the standard dual seat.
