Hi Guys

As some of you guys might know. i have 1951 bullet engine

i was planning to rebuild the engine. and was thinking of swaping with indian engine

just because of megneto repair are sometime very costly for family man.

i have found this product , , basically it sits in lucas metnego body

price seems within my range. £150

anyone used this conversation kit please let know or know other alternatives

I whave to admit that I am biased and prefer a mag over EI every time. £150 or less is about what I expect it to cost to overhaul a magneto. Unless the mag is well and truly knackered?


The weakest link in the system is the 6v dynamo and its regulator box: Do you plan on riding far with the lights on?


From the mechanical aspect, the Indian 350 bottom end is stronger than the '51, and it is easier and cheaper to recondition...

Thanks Tim for your feedback. not planning to drive in night. nor long distances.
my friend just 350 Euro for his bullet magneto overhaul. he said he just left the bike in rain :-(

350E to fix a mag that had 'only' been exposed to rain is suspect on all accounts...

Magnetos are excellent technology and once refurbished with modern windings (if required) and solid state capacitors are pretty much fault free. There is a mountain of nonsense talked about them largely because people have pulled them apart and not been able to put them back together. Also pulling the armature out of a mag without putting in a keeper can see the magnet loose a substantial amount of grunt. Send it to Dave Lindsley or similar and you should have an entirely reliable and original bit of kit that starts and runs a bike fine. The solution for the generator is to put in an LED headlamp bulb which means you can ride with the lights on all day without stressing the generator.
