Hi
Apologies for a potentially daft question.. I know the gearbox on a bullet can be swapped with engine in situ.... What about the engine?... I've always removed and replaced whilst attached to the g/b....can the engine be removed and refitted with the gearbox in situ?.. Thought I'd ask before I try

Hi TOM---- short answer is}--Yes, it can but it's a bit of a squeeze from what I remember......This subject was on here a few years ago along with a video... I've had a quick look for it but no luck so far.. I was in a situation where a previous owner had botched-up fitting an oversize Bronze bush into the small end of my then owned Classic 500's con-rod.....( The OEM piston could rotate approx 10 degrees, and I had ridden it back to Telford from the South coast not knowing the state it was in !!.... Tough old boots, aren't they ??)...So, I had researched this idea and had made a start but the bike was sold on thus I never actually got to do it myself but others on this forum posted photos showing a rolling chassis with the old 4-speed box and chain still attached.........A vague memory about using locking nuts to partly unscrew those 4 main mounting bolts ??------Sorry matey, best I can offer at the moment...Paul,(Bullet Whisperer) and TIM NZ, can you guys help here ??

Yep, done it several times on singles and Twins. The 4 gearbox studs can be removed from the rear. You will need to make some half nuts by cutting a couple of standard nuts in half, then one full nut and a half locked together on the stud and extract. Obviously before this you remove ancillaries including footrests, primary case, clutch and chain etc. This way the bike stays on the stand. You can get quite quick at this if necessary, guess how I know!

Cheers guys
Basically I have the rolling chassis with nowt in it.
I have a 5 speed box ready to go in whilst the bottom end gets a talking to.
I want to, in the meantime, install the box etc etc and then fit the engine once I get it back.

As Mark says it can be done, But if the engine and gearbox are both out why? It's easier to fit as a unit.

Ah, music to my ears !!--- a 5-speed box to go in....You won't regret it, honestly.......Whilst you have the thing in bits why not go up 1 tooth on the standard gearbox output ?? The bike in standard trim will take it and you'll have a less-stressed engine overall.........

Why... Because I've got the box ready to go in with a few other bits and pieces.rear sets etc.. Also leaving gearing standard at the moment as engine is being spoken to in no uncertain terms.. I want it to rev out in every gear.. I may consider 18T later depending how things pan out....

Hi TOM....Is the OEM piston in there by any chance ??------ it won't be for long if you go for High revs. instead of low-down torque and set gear ratio accordingly..Uh-oh, I see you mentioned Rear-sets ? Will clip-ons and a humpy rear seat be featuring as well?..
If you want a high-reving, built for the job, 500cc single roadster then please buy my Honda XBR 500 off me, it's for sale right now.... On the other hand if "speaking to the engine in no uncertain terms" means you are prepared to spend a lot of serious money on it then that's fair enough...Photos please so we can share the results ??
