Hi All

My 53 Meteor has been fitted with exposed spring rear shocks.. I want to fit enclosed type, more in keeping with bikes original design. With that in mind I was thinking of going for the Hagon knurled adjuster Gurling replica type as supplied by Mr H... Question is Will they fit and what length 290 or 300mms

Thanks

Tom

Do you still have the centre stand fitted?

If you fit too long a shocks the stand wont work properly...

These early Meteors were fitted with Enfield's own make of shock absorber which was very short, only 10.5" centres. I doubt you'll get anything that short today but as Tim says, too long and you'll lose the use of your centre stand!

Some of us have found that the later pre-EFI Indian Bullet centre stand works well on the '56-on Redditch framed Bullets and twins, might that be a possibility with the pre-'56 frames too? You should be able to get a set of 11.5"/290mm shock absorbers without any problem.

There are two lengths of Alloy centre stand...

The Indian centre stand with the 'foot' wont work on a twin pipe Meteor, the foot will foul the Left muffer.

If you are after something for originality sakes I have pair of original 53 Meteor rear shocks lying about doing nothing. But to be frank, they are not well suited to modern riding, and really only good for originality sake?

The 'oil-seal' arrangement on them is naff, they have provision for topping-up and level checking, something that needs doing at least once a week if used daily.
