I am trying to check the level of oil on my 1956 clipper. There is a level indicator attached to the filler cap on the front of the engine but no marks on the dip stick. At what level should it be?

What engine size?
In the manual for the 250 here:-
https://www.manualslib.com/manual/12095 ... =11#manual it states keep the oil level well above the bottom of the dipstick. Do not however fill the tank above the oil return plug or oil may escape past the filler cap.

On early engines (I'm guessing you're referring to the pre-unit Clipper) which have no marking on the dipstick I've always worked to a slightly over half-way level and this seems to be ok.
