Starting problem and Amal question

Hi, I have just accuired a 2005 500 Bullet which I am unable to start. It has a 535 kit and a 932 Amal carb. Is that the correct size carb? The battery is good and there is spark. It is fitted with a Boyer ignition. It will pop on kickover but will not run. Any suggestions welcome! Thanks, Adrian.

Hi Adrian. 32mm is just ok for a 535 but if you didn't build the bike I would check everything starting with the carb settings. Call (or email) Hitchcocks and find out what jetting they recommend. Also, find out what Mk of Boyer you have, is it 3 or 4? Boyer ignitions are very sensitive to voltage although the Mk4 less so. And check battery voltage, you need a fully charged reading of 13+ volts. There are more things to do (valve and ignition settings for instance) but start with the above! Good luck, REgards, Mark

Ah, another Adrian!
Assuming you have good sparks coming at the correct time (+1 over Mark M's comment regarding the Boyer ignition boxes) the problem is fuel side. You don't say if it's a Mk1 or Mk2 Amal (a 932 would make it a concentric carb), but it might be a case of checking for air leaks where the carb mounts, or possibly a strip and clean if there's a blocked pilot jet (the basic Mk1 Concentric is a bit of a pain in this respect). With a Mk1 most users seem to be able to start just by momentarily flooding the carb with the tickler and no need for the choke.

Pop on kick over, sounds like the spark is coming at the wrong time, check timing and that the wires from the pick up to the boyer box are the correct way round.
