Electronic Ignition

My old Redditch 350 is currently running points and I have considered converting to electronic ignition. Nobody seems to want to provide a 6V system for a bike that runs an alternator & distributor. I have spoken with Boyer and they advised the problem is that if the battery disconects the alternator can put circa 200v through the electrics. If I convert the bike to 12V they will provide a system and offer a warranty. I don't really understand why having a 12v battery and coil will eliminate the problem of 200v volts going through the electronics. Its the same alternator !!!! I don't want to convert to 12V so perhaps somebody could explain

Ohm's Law. Wattage = Amps x Voltage
The resistance of the Boyer remains constant, but when the Voltage is doubled the Amperage gets halved (less amps = less damage). Probably misremembered something I learnt almost 50yrs ago incorrectly so I wait to be corrected...

That's spot-on RIC----same thinking for having a 12v wiring system rather than a 6v one ---- or 25Kv for railway overhead power transmission-- 400,000v National Grid etc.. upping the Voltage reduces the Amperage...

The easy way is to convert to 12v, (Same stator and rotor) only bulbs battery and coil need to change, and fit a zenner diode. Simple
BUT you will still face possible issues with a flogged out points drive assembly...
Why you want to fit a EI is beyond me, why not convert to Diesel and do away with a electrical based ignition system altogether?

I would leave it alone, with 6 volts and points, it got this far with them.

Boyer might not want to sell you a 6V electronic ignition but if you insist on a 6V kit Pazon will sell you one, you will find some here if you look down the page a bit.
http://www.pazon.com/ignition/sure-fire-ignitions/
Pazon was founded by ex-Boyer staff and relocated to New Zealand, but their kits are still available over here. Suggest you drop them an e-mail.
My ignition upgrade for a later Redditch coil ignition Bullet would be to retrofit a Lucas SR1 magneto if I could find an advance/retard unit for it. One sold on ebay for £78 the other day...
