I wouldn't count myself as any kind of expert but i've looked into this for my C5. The wisdom is that the wrap keeps the gasses hot and therefore they are less dense and exit the exhaust faster, this can make the bike run lean (see my previous question on free flow exhaust). It can also hide any corrosion, stays wet if it rains and collects road grime/salt etc. I have decided not to wrap mine for the moment. It looks good though IMHO.

I seem to remember a debate on here a while back about the supposed benefits, might be worth doing a search? For what it's worth, I wrapped mine and haven't noticed any difference. Oddly enough, I think they look better without, but my pipe was already corroded and scabby,,,,,,, and a mate gave me half a roll of wrap he had left over,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Why ever would you want to waste money with that nonsense and in the process make you bike look like some terrible trendy hipster mess? For over one hundred years motorcycles have functioned perfectly well without it.

It has its place.
I put two rolls around the wife's Virago after market rear down pipe, which prior to doing so burnt through a set of waterproofs almost every ride. So it's more than paid for itself and also if she's ever unfortunate enough to get trapped under the bike it should provide enough of a thermal safety net for her not to suffer life changing burns to her right leg.

but yeah other than that its crap and a total waste of money!

Well that's clear then, it's a crap, total waste of money. But then, I guess my bike looks like some terrible hipster mess,,,, so what do I know?

I think you can discount any gains from "keeping the gasses hot and therefore they are less dense and exit the exhaust faster"
On a F1 engine- more than likely.
On an RE engine - you'll not notice.

Unless it's needed for safety reasons or to stop plastic over-trouser legs melting, pipe wrap -sorry, pipe rap - looks all wrong on older-style bikes, IMHO. This Velo was soon at Sammy Miller's a few weeks ago.
