Hi all

, my throttle cable on my electra x gave way yesterday so today which left me riding the last 5 miles of a lovley ride home controlling the bike with the break and clutch . I took delivery of a new one from our hosts. Can anyone explain the simplest steps and procedure to follow when installing the cable.

Cheers Reds

Take the petrol tank off so the dog can see the rabbit and put the new cable alongside the old cable before you remove the old cable. (I have a spare cable already in position so if a cable breaks when out on the road it is easy to replace. You don't need to remove the petrol tank either.)
WARNING when you put the petrol back be very careful not to trap anything or cut through a wire.

If its the same throttle set up as the old iron barrels then ensure you don't lose the little split brass ferrule that sits on the end of the outer cable where it enters the twist throttle..

Throttle won't work without it and its a slippery little devil that will find the darkest corner of the workshop to hide in when it falls off..

You have been warned.

Well , today I took tank off removed old cable dismantled carb , replaced with new cable put all back together and put tank back on . Happy although it took me about a hour and a half. Hit the start button and it won't start. I wheeled Mr Singh as my daughter named him back into the garage worn out as just come off night shifts. Any ideas.

Reds, why did you dismantle the carb? (Which is why I suspect the bike won't start.)

Now I am even more puzzled, on my Electra X, the cable just comes away from the operating arm on the side of the carburetor. No dismantling necessary.

Mr Smurf, he obviously has a different carb with the usual motorcycle cable fitting?.

"usual motorcycle cable fitting." I don't remember any motorcycle I have ever owned having anything other than the cable fitting into a lever on the carburetor or the actuating arm on a bank of carburetors.

Amal & Villers carbs use a throttle cable that moves the slide through the top/cap.
