Burnt Rotor !!

Primary case off reveals horrors !! Problem was - Ammeter showed +ve while riding, but battery had discharged after a long ride, investigation into it's cause reveals worst case scenario. Need new rotor + stator.

Hi Hemant. As the cable lead out from the stator looks ok, it appears that the short has occured on the metal loop that secures the lead out wires to the stator chassis...you can get new stators quite cheaply though and perhaps select a more powerful version too.

Just thought of something else....before you connect up the new alternator check that the rectifier is not faulty and allowing the battery to discharge back through to the stator...there is just a possibility that a back discharge has burnt out the coils....just something to check.

Hi Les, Thanks...Just replaced the old solid state rectifier + Zener set up to Enfields combined reg/rect. Need to get some proper connection to finish it off when I get stator in place ...In the meantime riding short runs with battery topped up.
