Cleaning an air filter

I'm sure this has been posted before, but I have an S&B cone filter on my 2006 Classic which has got fairly mucky over the years and I would like to clean it. Now opinion on what to use for cleaning varies. Some say only use a specialised cleaning fluid, others say detergent and water. Is there any consensus chaps?

Cheers

I would use petrol and a tooth brush , speedway bikes clean them after every meeting , takes 5 mins , if you live in a dusty part of the world oil it and clean it once a week and re-oil , I live in Australia and wrecked my bore running with no filter , I'm ultra fussy now .

I have used ordinary dishwasher detergent and hot water on the conical air filter on my Model G. That worked absolutely fine. The filter was clean and good as new afterwards. I really can't see the need for expensive special cleaners for these filters.

Hot soapy water here too, then a rinse with clean water and dry overnight.
