Was about to borrow a friend's welder to tag weld light
brackets to stubby mufflers etc, but just learnt the
unit was a MIG, not the more gentler TIG. Anyone recall
if the MIG is too severe ,and will burn a hole in sheet
metal, or would brazing be better. Also forget if it is
mandatory to grind the Chrome or Zinc coating off the
attachment spots, Thanxs, lads

Hi Gordon,
Best to grind chrome off in area. MIG will be ok if used as spot weld, short bursts on trigger. Set current mid range to start and practice on some scrap, if you try to put a run of weld on it will most probably blow thro.

Sa, grateful for you reminding of MIG,s potency. Will do a dry run on
tin scraps. Actually, said friend has oxy/acet down there too, so may
revert to the familiar brazing, cleaning chrome area off first. Thank you.

Yes, short bursts or you'll just melt it. Practice if you can to set the amps and feed. Tidy up with a grinder afterwards.

If you need to ask?, Perhaps you should get your friend to do the welding.

Brazing would do it but you are going to make more mess of the surrounding chrome. The heat from MIG is a lot more localised.
