Carburetor trouble?

Hi, I have a pre war Royal Enfield 350 sv. When I went to start it the other day, I tickled the carb, (Amal 274) as usual but no fuel came out of the hole, kept tickling it but nothing.. Took the float bowl top off and the fuel was about 2/3 the way up with the bowl floating. I pushed the bowl down, expecting the chamber would flood with fuel, but it just stayed the same. Not knowing if this was right, I went for a spin and after a short distance it started misfiring a lot. When I got back I checked the float chamber and there wasn't much fuel in it..
I drained the tank and checked the filter in the tap, and the fuel line, but that seemed fine. Am I missing something?
Regards.
