Hi,
What you have is a 250 motor and gearbox from a 1956 250 Clipper. The Clipper is just a upgraded Model S with rear suspension and nacelle fork top fitted with a 80 mph D shaped speedo. The 250 Model S and Clipper did not share the same gearbox as the Model G. The Model G had the heavy weight gearbox whereas the 250s had the Albion middle weight gearbox. This gearbox had a smaller outer cover with no neutral finder lever. The heads and barrels on the Clipper looked more sporty with the extra finning and the lug at the rear of the head by the rocker box is for the head support to the frame. If you are still unsure as to if your engine is a 250 or 350 G poke a piece of wire down the spark plug hole and measure the stroke – the 250 engines were 77mm, whereas the 350 were 90mm.
This model had coil ignition with a alternator and alloy primary cases. If the crank cases are correct there should be 3 threaded holes 120 degrees apart on the left side crank case that the primary case bolted onto. If not there then the cases are most likely 1955 as this model had the points ignition with generator and steel primary covers.
I would post a picture of the head from the parts book but that is just too much technology for me.
The headlamp bracket on the forks in the photo is the same that I had on my 1951 Model S.
Nice photo of the parts – taken in the lounge or the kitchen?
Hope that this has been of use.
Regards,
