A really stupid question

I have a pair of our hosts Amal style handlebar grips and need to remove the horrible hard plastic originals from my 2007 bullet. Has anyone got any tips for easy removal of the original grips and fitting the new ones or do i just cut the originals off with a stanley knife (other knives are available).

I've just taken some nasty plastic GT grips off my project Interceptor like this: using a screwdriver I lifted the inner end of the grip away from the bar and sprayed in some GT45 (silicon spray) and then twisted the grip round the bar. Once it started to move I sprayed in a bit more and it quickly slid right off. This assumes someone hasn't glued them on though!

If you intend to throw them away, just cut along their length with a Stanley knife, I have done this when having to replace a clutch lever and refitted it with the cut at the bottom, out of sight with a small dab of Super glue to hold the cut together. As the Mongoose says, "simples".

If I want to re-use the grips I use one of these to twist them off, --

Just done this exact job. Cut 'em off with a Stanley. Boil the kettle. Stick the new one/s in a cup of boiling water. Bash 'em on with the palm of your hand. The last inch or so is the worst but you can grip & twist them the into final position.

As has been said cut them off, to replace spray bar and inside grip with hair spray slide on immediately the spray acts as a lube it then dries and sticks them in place. Even more simples.

The kettle is your friend. Put bike on sidestand and pour boiling water over the grips, one at a time obviously. The grips will expand and should slide off or be easily pulled off with a towel (they will be hot!). Same applies to fitting new ones, but the bars will be warm and wet so they new ones should slip on or be eased on with a push.
