Tornado's tyres and gearbox seals

I am still trying to work out the best tyres for byway use as well as on the road. the MEFO 99s look interesting, but Have I left it too late?
Even now, Tornado is undergoing surgery to have the new sealed bearings fitted in the gearbox.
Still, Chris is ok about having two sessions as Tornado lives there whilst I am in France anyway.
