Anyone struggled recently installing the crude return kick starter spring?
No guideline in the manuals as whether to wind the 'D' slot spring cover
back ONE or TWO rotations. With ONE rotation, kick pedal needs a help with
your toe to return, whilst TWO rotations back is a real struggle with a
screwdriver in one of the cover's slots, and it inevitably springs back in
your face. Not to mention trying to push the 'D' spring cover in at the same
time with a mere two hands. Thanxs all

Yes Gordon, it's a struggle and I've not found an easy solution. You have to get it round twice though to make it effective. I use a strong cord hooked on to the spring so it's controllable without getting your fingers too close.

Yes, as Pete says. No easy way but a spring puller tool (try that search on Ebay) will help. The spring retaining cup must have good clean edges (ie, not too worn) to ensure it goes on firmly and can't skid back off. I also found a large socket or tube big enough to pass over the kickstart shaft helps even out the pressure. Happy Christmas!

I think (having had conversations with Gordon before,) he is referring to the pre-54 type of Albion box which has the gearchange and kickstart on separate shafts. If you have a look at one of the Parts Books for these models you'll see the arrangement. The later type is a lot better, but I have managed to break off the spring in the shaft before and then what do you do!

Thanxs as always for your support, lads, particually reminding one
the spring installion is not for the timid two times wound back. Glad
Mark clarified the need to utilize a 'D' spring cup not too mauled.
Will try the current one again with a dab of yellow paint on the flat
part before investing heavily in a new cup. Have had used a washer to
retain cup before putting kick pedal back on. Gearbox is a pre'54 as
Mark mentioned. Meanwhile Merry Christmas to all, even if they wound
down the Christmas music today after a mere two months!
