Ellopeeps

Simple enough question, how many ml does it take to raise the oil level from the low mark to the high mark on the dipstick?

Thanks Steve, I drained a fair bit out of the sump after not parking at TDC for a while, so want to gauge whether I'm burning any oil beyond the initial startup or just spurting it over the chain :-)

The common garden variety pre AVL/UCE 350 Bullet can expect to use 2cc per Km traveled (3cc per mile). What year is your bike? Pre 2000 350's do not have an oil seal on the timing side of the crank and are far more prone to Wet Sumping...

Hi Tim, your oil consumption figures seem a little on the high side

It was first registered as new in '98, but the engine number says it's a '92.

That's 3 litres per thousand miles Tim. No way any engine should use anything like that.

My experiences shows anything up to 3cc per mile traveled is not to be unexpected, especially when the mileages increase and the throttle is well exercised. More so on the earlier motors that rely on corks for the crankshaft seals.

Later low milage motors with valves and guides in good order will be half that. By the time the motor has done +40,000m +3cc per M typical, and a top end overhaul not far away.

For most pre AVL 500 still running the OEM piston, 3cc per mile could almost be considered normal. 4cc and over per mile and the piston and rings will be fornicated.

Well, we'll have to differ on this one Tim.
I've never had an engine use anything like that (and I've had more than a few dogs in my time)

The only oil burner I have owned was a Leyland Mothercare. (The Car With The Built in Rattle) Austin 1300, it smoked like a destroyer trying to hide from a pocket battleship.
