Hi, the pilot lights on my '89 bullet don't work. they haven't worked for years and the last MOT the bike had (6 years ago before a sojourn in MOT-free Guernsey) was with a very forgiving test centre.
Are they an MOT failure item?

The pilot light on my Tiger 90 has never worked while I've owned the bike and it has never been mentioned at any mot test.

Mot regs say if a light is fitted it must work. Ask your mot guy if they need to be working and if he says yes you can just remove then and refit them after the mot.

Are these the two "tiger-eyes" either side of the casquette or the one in the headlamp assembly. True, "if they are fitted they must work" but the tiger-eyes might be un-fitted as unessential. The pilot lamp in the headlamp is almost certainly a UK lighting regulation requirement as it is essentially a parking lamp. There are some differences in requirement between MoT and that of the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 No.1796
http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1989/1796/made. The pilot lamp in the headlamp shell is very easy to connect up, it runs on the same circuit as the tail lamp.

Took the bulbs out years ago as a waste of wattage

Wasted wattage?
Well they are good with led bulbs and might even help safety a little.

(If it has a light fitted, it has to work...) What about those 60's style mod scooters?

My mot guy says pilot / side lights are not required, just head, tail and stop lights.

You can have the pilot light on tye same circuit as the tail light but the pilot light should go out when the main beam lamp is switched on which of course it wont do if wired with the tail light.
