On bank holiday weekend I had gone out with a friend on my 2009 C5. We had driven 60 miles, with a torrential storm on the way,and were returning. About halfway home it started to rain again, so I stopped for my friend to put on his wets.
When I tried to re-start the starter motor spun but nothing else happened. We tried putting it into gear and turning the engine a little - no joy. The starter motor spun, and the engine didn't. Bump started it easily, and drove home, where I could turn it off and restart as if nothing was amiss. Tried again the next day, and back to starter spinning but engine not.
So I feared the worst, and looked forward (not) to replacing the sprag clutch. However, when I took the casing off, there was a clunk as a large bolt fell into the oil tray. The whole bolt and washer had come out of sprag clutch - seemed to have avoided damaging anything - no sign of metal fragments or swarf.
I just bolted it back up again to the appropriate torque setting (jamming the srag and clutch gearing with a piece of softwood). Bolted the casing back on with a new gasket, refilled the oil, and it's as happy as larry.
I haven't heard of this happening to anyone else, but if it happens to you it's not as bad as it first seems.
