In an effort to address my bullets warm starting problems I removed the carb yesterday and gave it a good looking at. I blew through every accessible orifice and sprayed wd40 through the remainder. All seemed clear, with the exception of the tiny horizontal passageway, visible from the air intake end at the bottom of the bore. I managed to clear this by blowing through the main jet whilst blocking all other holes with my fingers.( A bit like playing the recorder!) Pilot and main jets were removed and inspected, and found to be clear, as was the float needle valve. Finally the carb (Micarb) was re-assembled and put back on the bike (500 iron barrel). After a few kicks the engine started but ran rough and wouldn't respond to either mixture adjustment of the pilot air screw ,nor throttle stop screw. The cold start/choke lever made no difference either. I ventured for a short ride around the block. Awful. After an overnight rest I had another look at the carb (off the bike) and couldn't find anything obviously amiss, except the float height was only measuring 19mm from bottom to carb body when in the closed position. I kept this in mind, but left things alone as I was careful not to handle the mechanism roughly during the previous days attempt. With carb back on I started the engine (four or five kicks) and found no improvement, but did notice black smoke from the exhaust. Aha! Mixture excessively rich, I thought, and set about adjusting the float height to the recommended 24/26mm. You've guessed it, Now it won't start at all. I obviously did something wrong during the initial cleaning/re-assembly exercise. Any ideas gentlemen.

Incorrectly reassembled choke? And not sitting fully on its seat?? Needle jet incorrectly fitted??? Throttle slide in upside down??? (Dont laugh, I have encountered that previously!!!)

Thanks Scalyback and Tim. Float valve is right way up. I didn't remove the needle jet, but I did remove the main jet. Could I have disturbed the needle jet when replacing the main jet? Do they have to connect in some particular way? Cold start is operating OK. Cheers.

Throttle slide was not removed from cable. On re-assembly I checked that throttle stop screw was causing the slide to rise and fall. I think the problem may lie with the main/needle jet. I must admit, until today I didn't know where the needle jet was.(deep shame).

I had an infuriating carb problem on another (non Enfield) of my bikes. After 2 carb strips, cleaning everything, experimenting with idle screw settings and everything else that would adjust, it just wouldn't idle or rev cleanly. Changing the coil fixed the carb problem immediately :-)

I know," most carb problems are electrical". But, my bullet was starting first kick from cold every time, but difficult to start from warm, and running perfectly in between. I'm afraid I've screwed something up whilst attempting tostrip and clean the carb. But thanks for your input.

Eventually I was able to make up a bike from out of all the left over parts.

Jokes aside, did you refit the washer under the main jet? The main jet abuts on the washer and screws into the base of the needle jet...

Double check that you have correctly positioned the needle into the slide, and the clip is in the correct groove; the bottom one.

Plus one for the washer, (main jet) Perhaps just change the spark plug for a known good one, rich running may have it tracking..
